If you’re looking for advanced vaping technology, the Firefly Collection is a great place to start as it uses the most advanced technology available in the vaping world.
Firefly vaporizers began as a creation by two men with careers in the technology field, Sasha Robinson and Mark Williams. Although both were smokers, they were more health conscious than many other smokers out there. After experimenting with vaporizers already on the market, they wanted to create a more high-tech smoking device. So, in 2012, after lots of research and prototypes, the first firefly vaporizers came into existence.
It wasn’t a simple task for them to create their portable vaporizer. They experimented a lot before settling on their final design. Originally, they wanted to use butane but due to safety worries, they decided to use batteries as a power source. The also had to experiment with the material for the chamber. At the time they were working on their vaporizer, most other devices used a nickel and chromium alloy. However, both Williams and Robinson developed an allergy to this metal and so had to experiment with other materials.
Once they were happy with their design, they showed it to the lead vaporizer distributor, Aaron LaCascio. With his positive reception, the Firefly vaporizers went on sale in December 2013.
The vaporizer was well-received by critics. It got praise from lots of sources including the New York Times. It was also the first vaporizer to win a design award. It won the Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s “The Good Design Award” in 2014.
The Firefly first went on sale for an eye-watering $269, but as it was designed as a high-tech and revolutionary device, this didn’t put buyers off and it sold well. These are no longer on sale but can still be picked up second hand if the Firefly 2 is too expensive for your budget.
The Firefly 2 is an updated version of the original Firefly and has some great additional features. It is also a lot more expensive at almost $330. It is, however, considered to be the top of its field.
The first thing that you notice about the Firefly is its design. It doesn’t look like other vaporizers out there and you can imagine how different it looked to other vaporizers that were available in 2013 when it was first available to buy. This was a deliberate design feature chosen by Robinson and Williams as the wanted something that was visually modern as well as technologically modern. The sleek look of this vaporizer definitely makes it an attractive buy as it certainly feels elegant and luxurious.
Even though Firefly vaporizers use the most advanced vaporization technology, it is still really simple and easy to use and produces a vapor of exceptional quality. It is also quick to use. It only takes 10 seconds for the vapor temperature to rise from 100°F to 400°F.
You can self-administer the strength of vapor you receive simply by altering how you draw the vapor from the device. A longer draw will give you a richer vapor whereas, with a shorter draw, you’ll get a lighter vapor. The Firefly takes around 45 minutes to charge and from a single charge, you can vape more than 40 rich draws and so many more shorter draws. You control the draw so you get the best experience for you.
Firefly vaporizers use a lithium-ion battery. This can be charged in two ways, either inside the Firefly itself or in an additional external charger. Having the option to charge the battery outside the device means that you can simply switch batteries over and don’t have to wait to use the vaporizer while the battery is charging.
If we compare this product to other vaporizers out there, it might seem on the heavier side. It weighs approximately 278 grams.
The vaporizer has a borosilicate glass heating chamber, which holds around 0.15g of dry herb. This is smaller than some other modern vaporizers and something many consider a negative. It has a wide opening and sides that are sloping. This allows the contents to be loaded and unloaded with ease.
The heat sinks are made from stainless steel, which is a reason for its additional weight in comparison to others. However, the stainless steel means that excess heat is dissipated. This means that Firefly vaporizers are cool when it is being used. The vapor path is also made from stainless steel. This means the flavor of your vapor is not reduced in any way.
The lid is magnetic and upon removing, allows you access to the vapor path so it can be cleaned really easily.
The original Firefly vaporizers come with a high-power rechargeable lithium-ion battery, an AC adapter, a carry case, a cleaning kit and a manual.
This vaporizer is something else. As it works by convection heating, you get a really clean and pure vapor. As it is an obvious older model, the rest of the market has caught up somewhat since its release.
At its launch, the Firefly really was the crème de la crème of vaporizers and, in order to keep up with the ever-changing market, a 2nd version was released, which I’ll discuss now.
Just like its predecessor, the second generation Firefly 2 also came out as game-changer in February 2016. Its improvements set it out against the crowd again. Newsweek named it as the “iPhone of vaporizers” and Maxim declared that it was “cleverly designed, rips like a champ and feels incredibly durable”.
So, how is it different from its forerunner? Firstly, it is significantly smaller and lighter than the original Firefly but doesn’t lose any of its power. In fact, it is more powerful and heats up more quickly. It is ready to go in just 3 seconds, which is particularly impressive, especially when you consider that its contemporaries were still taking a whole minute to be ready to use. It also cools down and heats up as you use it, which means you are in the driving seat much more and can control it better.
The best thing about this vaporizer though has got to be its ability to be used alongside an app. This really sets it aside from other vaporizers on the market. The app allows you to decide the temperature, which can be between 200°F and 500°F, which is 100° hotter than the original Firefly vaporizers. The app connects to the device via Bluetooth and also allows you to see the battery life of your vaporizer.
The Firefly is a convection vaporizer, which means that everything is vaporized and doesn’t burn. The air is heated before it touches the product you’re vaporizing so you get a really strong, powerful and smooth vapor.
Like its predecessor, it has a magnetic lid that can be removed for easy cleaning. The body, this time, is made from a magnesium alloy and there is a borosilicate glass bowl as well as a glass vapor path. The change from aluminum to magnesium is what allows for the lighter weight of the product. Aesthetically, it’s not much different from the first Firefly vaporizers but in terms of temperature and settings, it definitely sets itself apart. It has six possible heat settings so you can really customize your vaping experience. In addition, the Firefly 2 can be used with waxes or concentrates as well as dried herbs.
The battery life is much improved and you get 2 in the box, so you don’t have to worry about running out of charge. You do, however, have to have the battery inside the device in order to charge it, which is different from the original Firefly. This is a significant downside to the Firefly 2, although the battery does charge fully in 45 minutes.
The mouthpiece contains a filter and can be removed, although some claim that this is a bit fiddly to remove.
It measures 2 x 7 x 7 inches and weighs 1.25lbs.
The Firefly 2 comes with 2 batteries, 3 concentrate pads, a USB charging dock and a cleaning kit. The kit contains 2 toothpicks, a brush for cleaning and some wipes.
It seems that the manufacturers really know what their customers want. They’ve kept a lot of the great features of the original Firefly vaporizers and made some substantial improvements in its size, weight and battery life. In terms of the negatives of this vaporizer, the high price tag might put some people off as might the fact that the batteries need to be in the device in order to be charged. Overall, it still remains the best vaporizer on the market.
Pros and Cons of Firefly vaporizers in comparison to other products on the market
Great quality vapor
Quick to charge
Comes with 2 batteries
Excellent mobile app
Six heat settings
A charged battery lasts a decent length of time (Firefly 2)
Available in 6 colors
Very expensive as far as vaporizers are concerned
Takes a short while to figure out how to use – particularly the higher-tech Firefly 2
Smaller chamber than others in the market – sometimes a quarter of the size
The temperature can’t be customized other than choosing one of the existing settings
Not discreet to use, particularly if you’re using the app alongside the vaporizer
There is no power button with the Firefly 2. This is because it is constantly on in standby, which means it’s always ready to use. This sets it apart from other vaporizers on sale. It has two touch sensors on each side of the device and these activate the device and the heating element to show a green flickering light. Once the light is sold, the vaporizer is ready to use. To use it, you simply draw on the mouthpiece.
To put it back into standby mode requires you to touch both sensors. It does take a while to get used to but once you’ve figured it out, you won’t be disappointed.
The App is available on both Android and iOS. The app can be used to change the temperature – including putting it into concentrate function and to check the battery level of your Firefly. You can also change other functions like change how it operates and turns on.
As with many Apps, they’re only good while they’re working and connected. Bluetooth can be a bit temperamental with any device so if you’re having trouble connecting to your Firefly then there are a number of things you can try. These are: closing down the App and restarting it, turning your phone off and on, switching on airplane mode, then off again and switching the Bluetooth off and on.
A downside of having an App means the device itself cannot be controlled without your phone. If changing the temperature is something you like to do whilst vaping, then it can become annoying to have to keep looking at and interacting with your phone. Not only do you need to make sure your vaporizer is fully charged, but you also need to make sure your phone is too and that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Unlike its predecessor, which had a single temperature setting, this one is much more adaptable to your vaporizing needs. It is recommended that temperatures between 330°F and 430°F are used as an herb setting. Anything above 430°F is for using with concentrates. If you were using a dry herb at a higher temperature setting, you risk burning the herb.
The different temperature settings have a different effect on vapor production. At lower temperatures, the vapor isn’t as thick but the flavor and quality are excellent. On higher settings, you gradually lose flavor during your vaping session.
The Firefly really lives up to its reputation. Yes, it’s expensive but the reviews speak for themselves and if you can afford the initial cost, you won’t be disappointed with it. Don’t worry if it takes a little time to figure out, we found using it a bit of a learning curve at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it will become your favorite piece of technology. If you do find problems with it, the Firefly customer service is great and you can text, chat live or call them!
